This segment of central air systems is the most neglected. Two factors contribute to this opinion. The first is “out of sight out of mind.” You cannot see the inside of your system nor can you see the dust on your house. The odors in your home is something you don’t even notice because you are there everyday. The other reason for neglect is cost. Let me assure you the additional cost for clean healthy air, pays for itself in multiple ways. The first thing you will notice is the reduction of dust in your house. Allergies will subside and you will feel so much better! It is a known fact among air quality experts that 60% of the air you breathe will come from your crawl space! That is huge! Have you ever been under your house? Let me assure you it is no place to spend the day!
Honeywell manufactures some great products for air quality. One of the coolest products I like, is actually their thermostats. The ease of their use along with the many functions is why we install their products. My favorite function is Air Circulate. In short, what it does is turn the fan on for a few minutes to circulate the air in your home. The programmable thermostats are very user intuitive.
Installing an air quality system is actually the best thing you could possibly do for your HVAC system. It will offer you an assurance that you and your family are breathing clean healthy air! The longevity of your unit will be greatly enhanced and you may even see a modest decrease in your utility bill, because a clean system does not struggle to meat your thermostat set point.
My Home
We purchased a 27 year old home that had a musty odor in the summer months. It was most noticeable when we came home from a 2 or 3 day trip. The HVAC duct system was original to the house. The AC units were 10 seer and 8 years old. I decided to change out the entire system. New ductwork and two new 16 seer Trane Package units. As a side note we changed out all the windows at the same time with high efficiency glass. Our power bill dropped over $100/month.
The odor had decreased but you could still smell it, especially on the extremely hot days. I found out that 60% of the air we breathe inside the house comes from the crawl space.
I immediately had the crawl space cleaned out of the original vapor barrier and 27 years worth of garbage. We laid new plastic and waited for the odor to go away. It was better but not completely gone. So my education into the indoor air quality market had been greatly enhanced. My research led me to Guardian Air by RGF
The Guardian Air is a duct mounted whole house Air Treatment System. The company guarantees satisfaction or your money back within 90 days of install. How awesome is that! 90 days to test drive it. The unit has a 3 year/25000 hour life span. The only thing I had to lose was time, so I decided to try it. It took us less than 2 hours to install two units.
The following night was fish for dinner. The odor usually lingers until the following day, not this time!!! It was completely gone before we went to bed at 10 pm. The musty odor smell has completely disappeared. The whole house smells clean and fresh like bed sheets just off the clothes line.
Nobody in my home has severe allergy problems so I cannot offer any testimony to its effectiveness for this problem. The company claims the product is designed to help eliminate sick building syndrome risks by reducing odors, air pollutants, and cold and virus causing germs.
With all of the different products on the market, I was as confused as you. Which to buy? The only thing I knew was I wanted a whole house system. They offered a 90 day satisfaction guarantee so I went with RGF. We have been thrilled with the performance and I am confident you will be also.

Allergies, Dust, Sickness
We have installed several filter systems from Trane and Honeywell. We had great reports back from our customers. Every customer that owns an air system is absolutely thrilled with the results. They all claim they have seen a great reduction in the amount of dust in their home. Odors have disappeared and people are much healthier!
Filters
What kind of filters should I use for my home? This must be the most common question I hear. I generally tell people that if they have allergies than buy the expensive pleated filters. Otherwise you can purchase the cheaper pleated filters. The spun fiberglass filters will allow too much dirt to enter your ductwork and the HVAC unit. Always purchase more than one filter and do not always follow the manufactures recommendation of when to replace. Everyone’s level of dust in their home is different. Some folks can get away with changing filters every 90 days. Others will need to change them every 30 days. Honeywell thermostats allow you to set reminders at specified intervals of when you want your filter changed. Another method would be to listen to your filter. If you are starting to hear it whistle, then it is time to change it.
